Facilities

The IoTLab offers its researchers a set of facilities, platforms and hardware equipment for research, testing and prototype realization. These include the collection of information from the physical world through smart sensors, its transfer to a control center, and the skills to develop control logic, processing and data visualization.

This open platform suits for the development of different vertical applications, and it is open to other research groups of Politecnico di Milano. 

A non-exhaustive list of available equipment is listed below.

Short-range IoT system development equipment

  • Wireless sensors development kit, with technologies: ZigBee, ZWave, 6LoWPAN, WMBus, DASH7, EnOcean, BLE, WiFi
  • Single‐board computer for multi‐purpose Gateway/Edge Server (Raspberry Pi e BeagleBoard)
  • Industrial multi-protocol Gateway
  • Battery-supplied Wireless BLE/ZigBee development kit, with 10 MEMS sensors on board
  • Wi-Fi development boards with on-board sensors
  • Monitoring sensors for different physical parameters (to be associated to the existing wireless sensor networks)

Long-range IoT system development equipment

  • LPWA (Low Power Wide Area) LoRaWAN (gateway and nodes) systems
  • Sigfox development board with on-board sensors
  • Cellular 5G/LTE/NB-IoT development boards

Indoor localization development equipment

  • UWB (Ultra Wide Band) systems for indoor localization of people/assets
  • Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) equipment
  • RFID smart antenna array systems for localization and identification
  • ZigBee nodes for indoor localization and monitoring
  • RFID UHF fixed systems RFID UHF mobile reader and printer
  • RFID HF/NFC reading systems

Smart Home development equipment

  • User Interface systems (tablets, vocal assistants)
  • Wearable devices (smart fitness band)
  • Intelligent and connected devices for the Smart Home (TV, speaker, thermostats, intercoms, locks, lightbulbs, LED, plugs, switches, sensors: presence, CO, CO2, temperature, humidity, vibrations, opening, etc.)
  • Electrical consumption monitoring kit for a single device
  • Sensors and smart plugs for electrical consumption (device/line) monitoring
  • Sensors for presence detection and people counting

IoTLab facilities are available for Politecnico di Milano research groups, as well as external personnel involved in collaborations or projects. The experimental tests have to be agreed with the IoTLab staff and have to be carried under the supervision of the IoTLab responsible personnel.
